Challenged with the task of transforming a monumental subterranean volume, serving as parking and storage, into a temporary exhibition space for comic strips, detritus. brought the scenography to its essential minimum: an exhibition “wall” carefully lighted by aerial led strips.
By weaving 90 linear meters of white fabric between the pre-existing load-bearing columns, the exhibition space is defined in a single and simple gesture while calming the otherwise cluttered space.
The scenography answers the client's needs all the while being extremely site-specific and playing with the pre-existing spatial condition. The use of fabric as an exhibition wall implied to carefully choosing devices used to protect and hang the drawings, as any additional weight would influence the textile’s shape and tension. Plastic foils hung by magnets were therefore used, permitting an easy setting and leveling of the pieces.
The minimalistic approach allows for a reflection on the means that are usually deployed for temporary exhibitions, with building and dismantling works often lasting longer than the exhibitions themselves and consuming of large amounts of materials that are not easily reusable due to hasty and non-reversible fastening (glue, nails, staples) and covering (paint, wallpaper adhesives).
Confronting those standards, the proposed scenography managed to create a 160 m2 well-lit “white box” using mainly raw and non-transformed materials. In the end, the entire scenography, weighing around 60 kilos, was dismantled into reusable raw parts by two people in less than a day.
